2  General / Open Discussion / Re: 2 way radios? on: August 01, 2007, 02:11:55 PM

OK now I'm thoroughly confused Sad

Ok. FRS is FRS, no matter WHO makes the units. But they may have brand-proprietary "privacy" features that only let them hear units of the same manufacturer, if set to do so.

GMRS radios operate on different frequencies, but INCLUDE the FRS frequencies (at least my motorola GMRS units do). To if you set your GMRS radio to the "shared" FRS channel, it will talk to FRS radios (of course the "privacy" features mentioned above may still be a problem unless you turn them off).

Better?

3  General / Open Discussion / Re: Dumb question about GPS cordinates on: July 31, 2007, 01:49:46 PM
DEFINITELY Degrees, Minutes, Seconds.

That is how Lat/Lon has ALWAYS been, (yes, it was in use LONG before GPS was invented).

4  General / Open Discussion / Re: 2 way radios? on: July 31, 2007, 01:47:48 PM
All FRS radios will talk to each other. All GMRS will talk to FRS as well, but GMRS has channels that are not accessible by FRS, only other GMRS.

Most manufacturers have their own "privacy" features, that will only allow them to talk to other units set the same way (meaning same brand), but those features can almost always be turned off as desired.

We use our Motorola GMRS to talk to both our Motorola AND Midland FRS units.

5  General / Open Discussion / Re: Do we still want to fight for "legal" places to ride? on: July 31, 2007, 01:10:19 PM
It's not just about forming a local group - they have relatively little clout. What is needed is a unified organization that operates on a national, state and local level, and brings all the smaller groups under their umbrella. The ATVA comes to mind, as does the AMA.

They already have their agenda and projects in the works; by working with them, we avoid reinventing the wheel... Join & get active.

Some of the posts in this thread (not naming names - it's obvious) are the direct result of learning to communicate via test messaging. *sigh*. I weep for this generation.

The thread seems to have drifted, so I'll try to winch it back... lol.

Like any other activity, the misdeeds of a minority few have dire consequences for the rest of us. It's always been so, in my experience, and probably will continue to be the case. The only way to deal with it fairly is to address the INDIVIDUALS who are a problem, and not everyone who "looks like them". I get that a lot on my street bike; it's a sport bike (aka crotch rocket), so immediately people think I'm one of those morons doing 100mph wheelies on the interstate. I'm not, but I get treated that way.

I've never been to Holeylands (even though it's on our way to the property we own west of Clewiston, and we pass it on US27 almost every weekend). From what I've heard, it's not the most perfect riding for sport quads or dirt bikes - levee riding can get pretty boring at 15 or 20 mph.

The answer is to try to get areas more suited to ATV's (both sport and 4x4/utility) & other ORV's (side by sides AND bikes) allocated for that kind of usage. In addition, we have to fight hard to keep open the (pathetically few) places we have now.

Just riding the way you like is not acceptable any more (if it ever was); whenever you're riding, you're an ambassador for our sport. Doing stupid things gets us a bad rep, and gets lands posted.

Oh, and by the way, I'm one of those guys who wears all my gear; I've been riding dirtbikes, ATC's, 4WD trucks and now Quads since I was 14.. I'm almost 52 now. I'm willing to bet I was riding before a lot of hotshots here were born. Just sayin', in case y'all think I'm some newbie poseur.

Excellent, thanks! I turn over the keys to the renters this Thursday, so after that I'll be starting the unpacking... getting the toys "free" is a priority, since I need to work out the kinks in my 51 year-old legs (must have been up & down that ladder to the attic 100 times).

8  General / Group Rides & Events / Re: Treasure Coast Mud Luvers Membership Ride July 14 on: July 20, 2007, 11:24:47 AM
Wish we could have made it... unfortunately, I'm in the middle of  moving; have to have everything out of the house & ready for the renters by the 26th... so no play until then (and after that, I have to dig out the quads from behind all the boxes)! Sad

We're interested in getting up there some time in the future though... never been there - is there parking (i.e. solid ground) for a 28' toy hauler? Where exactly is this place located?

Thanks, and hope to see y'all up there soon.

Isn't that diagonally across from the Miccosukee casino? Looks like there's room to park the toy hauler in that truck stop on the NW corner too... Smiley will have to check it out one weekend...

10  General / Open Discussion / Re: What a stupid dog... on: July 18, 2007, 04:13:41 PM
What is "wrong" with that dog is commonly known as "food aggression". Basically it means he will attack anything that comes near his food. In this case it's his own paw... it could just as easily have been a small child...

Not good. not funny.

11  General / Open Discussion / Re: Redneck expresions on: July 17, 2007, 11:38:59 AM
Ok... four come to mind...three of them are PG rated...(bonus points for naming all four movies).

"Crazier than a sh*thouse rat"

"Ya can't ride two horses with one a**" (This one specifically applies to us, as we have 3 quads, 2 dirt bikes and 3 street bikes)

"Well I been to a picnic, a world's fair and a rodeo, and if that ain't the STUPIDEST thing I ever heard over a set o' headphones..."

"You use your tongue purdier than a twenny-dollar wh*re"

Congrats on the new truck; best of luck with it.

If you get caught without one, they hang, draw and quarter you, bury the remains in 4 unmarked graves at the four farthest points of the map...

 Jester Jester

Well, not really, but there I'm sure there are fines involved, and in an extreme case, possibly confiscation of your quad.

I'm just glad I'm not the president, I wouldn't want to have the power to completely absolve a friend of mine of all wrongdoing, and not do it.

how could I sleep at night.

I have to wonder how many friends each president comes into the office with and how many friends they leave with.

Id@

How many friends do you have that would NEED pardoning?

16  General / Tech Corner / Re: WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT REJET on: July 05, 2007, 12:41:34 PM
Seriously, in regard to ANY properly set up 4 stroke carbureted engine:

If you increase the air-flow through the mill (by a low restriction exhaust and/or intake), then you are creating a LEAN condition (as opposed to running rich). An engine that runs lean tends to run hotter than normal, even though it might be making more power.

Severity of the consequences depends on just how lean it gets; a very lean mix will indeed cause pinging (detonation) and eventual engine failure. Simply removing the baffle shouldn't make that happen, but it might be a good idea to compare the exhaust gas temp before & after pulling the baffle.

Personally, I always rejet when changing the exhaust & intake; the results are SO much better than just doing one or the other.

1.How many quads do you own? Between Susan & I; 2 sport quads, 1 4X4 utility quad &  2 dirt bikes.
2.Does your family ride with you? Whenever we can drag them with us; The teenager is boy-crazy.
3.Approximately how many miles do you drive to get to your riding spot? 90 or so.
4.Would you have purchased a car or otherwise more fuel-efficient vehicle if you didn't own quads? nope. Need a truck.
5.Approximately how much do you spend on a weekend of riding (ex. camping equipment, food, fuel) depends; if we just take the truck up to the farm (where most of the toys are kept) it's only the cost of diesel - IF we're taking the toy hauler, then there's also gasoline for the generator & fueling station, food, drinks and mostly TIME.

Hope your recovery is quick and pain free. Good thing we're issued tow of those, huh?

In case you need something silly to cheer you up - check out this video on youtube - you may find it relevant...

You wouldn't want to ride this trail w/o a helmet.  I picked up a couple of new scratches on mine as well as everyone else.  NO ONE rode w/o helmet and half or more including myself wore chest protector.

Yep; +1 to that! And I'm thinking real hard about getting a good roost deflector... I have bruises all over my chest from flying stones & branches. Won't stop me from hitting those trails again if I get the chance!

I would post more but the site won't let me so I will see if I can set up a photo bucket account

Try webshots.com - they allow free posting of pix. The free account has a limit on how many, but you should be able to get a hundred or so in there.

Trail is 4.5 miles long......Shawn is working on a deal where we can lead trail rides but as for staying open, Mark has not decided on that yet....He was impressed w/ the interest in the trail system though so if you go make sure you inquire on the trails and when enough people say it he may give in..... Grin

AMEN to THAT - Susan & I are primarily trail riders, and we'd LOVE to see them make the trails a regular thing up there. We had a great time there on the weekend of the rally - hit the trails several times.

I'd heard it was a 7.5 mile loop from the trail guide. Geez; the whoops section alone seemed like it went on forever  Grin

22  General / Photo Gallery & Videos / Re: The Wife's New Ride. DISCLAIMER: WE ARE NOT LEAF LICKERS. on: July 02, 2007, 09:34:44 AM
Can I get that in a pick-em-up truck?

Our 2006 Chevy 2500HD Duramax/Allison diesel gets 18 mpg combined (when not towing the toy hauler).

As for the Prius - I rode in a friend's; the technology is interesting, and it's fun around town, but it doesn't have a lot of oomph for high-speed passing. I also find the silence (it's VERY quiet) unsettling, and that big ol' TV display showing which motor is routing power to/from whichever to be VERY distracting.

23  General / Open Discussion / Re: Steering Stabilizer, is it worth it? on: July 02, 2007, 06:54:11 AM
i also have a question, how often do you have to rebuild them??

The one on my streetbike has about 2.5 years/20,000 miles on it & still seems fine, but I'd think the constant pounding of off-road riding would require more frequent attention.

Tony
24  General / Open Discussion / Re: Steering Stabilizer, is it worth it? on: July 01, 2007, 08:36:52 AM
I have a Scotts/Ohlins on my street bike (ZX-9r) and it is WELL worth the $$$ I paid. Keep in mind, on a street bike, you're not constantly hitting roots, stumps & whoops... so imagine how mush improvement you'll see on a quad.

I'm planning on getting the precision unit as soon as I can convince the g/f that it's not just another "fluff" accessory.

25  General / Racing Scene / Re: L-CROSS MX TRACK now OPEN for QUADS too!!! on: June 26, 2007, 11:22:23 AM
We didn't get a chance to try the MX track while at the Rally (had a great time, btw; thanks for doing such a great job), but we did watch for bit while waiting at the trailhead.

The trail rides (fast version) were what got most of our time; we're hoping you guys are planning to make that a regular thing as well. If you do, we'd be up there at least once a month with the Toy Hauler & toys.

Once again, thanks for a super event last weekend; well done!
