That is a grey rat snake, haven't seen one of those in a long time. He WAS a very beneficial snake to have around . They eat mice, rats and roaches. The reason he was in your yard was because you must have had some of those critters there for him to eat. He was coiled and striking because he was scared. Left alone he would have wandered off hoping to never see you again.

I have a Dodge Dakota. It hauls a Rincon 680, a Rancher 400 and a Recon 250 where ever I need to go. i am a Dodge Girl!
