Title: darn frog Post by: Honda328i on August 08, 2005, 04:22:19 PM I don't really care that much about it, but at night my wife is continually bothered by a very noisy bull frog somewhere in the vicinity of our back yard. (We live in a suburban subdivision.) Every time I go out to catch the sucker, it stops croaking. Frog croaking, or wife complaining, you get the picture. ;D
Does any one have any tricks for getting rid of an allusive frog? Traps, poison, etc. NO explosives or guns please, the neighbors are too close. Title: Re: darn frog Post by: backinsaddle on August 08, 2005, 04:55:01 PM I have frogs in my backyard that love to eat the dog's food. You could put some dog food out and get rid of it when it comes to eat.

I know, wierd, isn't it. I used to have to sit in the back yard and make sure the dogs got to eat before the frogs got to it. One time I put the food down, came back out about 10 minutes later, and there were 6 giant frogs in the dog dish, one piled on top of the other, and all the food was gone...needless to say, I have some really fat frogs in my yard. Now I have a bin feeder that the frogs can't get into, and the frogs look like they need liposuction cause of all the excess skin cause they're not eating like they used to. I need to take a pic one of these days. Title: Re: darn frog Post by: NPRVinson on August 08, 2005, 05:17:10 PM Frogs won't eat dog food but toads do. If it's a toad making all the noise it's not the female {the big ones} it's the male. Thet are about 1/5 the size of the females. They can be very annoying and LOUD!

Title: Re: darn frog Post by: bigscrub79 on August 08, 2005, 09:10:26 PM We have Cuban tree frogs in our back yard, a BB gun takes care of them. They have a very irritating croak and are like tree frogs but 3 times the size. I am going to the local feed store to see what they say to get rid of them, when i find out i will post and let you know.
Title: Re: darn frog Post by: Dr.Dirt on August 09, 2005, 12:32:53 AM Like J.D. said if you shine a flashlight on them you can see their eyes glow, then you will have a target glowing target for your BB gun....But if I was you I would just go outside with a fork and eat them. :o

"Spray area with a heavy concentrate of salt water. The salt water will sting their feet causing them to go away." But here's a more humane approach (if you can catch them): The most humane way to kill juvenile and adult toads is to catch them and put them into a secure container with air holes (plastic takeaway food containers are ideal). Put the container in a refrigerator overnight which causes the toad to go into a coma-like state. Then move the container to the freezer the next morning and freeze until the next garbage collection day or freeze it for a couple days and then bury them in the backyard compost bin or garden bed. Good luck! ;) Title: Re: darn frog Post by: inked4life87 on August 09, 2005, 09:35:30 AM WOULD YOU REALLY ANT TO PUT A TOAD IN YOUR FRIDGE OR FREEZER.YOU KNOW THEY PISS ON EVERY THING.

Title: Re: darn frog Post by: Grizzlygirl on August 10, 2005, 05:39:56 PM I found this on a site, it could be helpful for you. The link is http://www.ehow.com/how_18427_rid-garden-toads.html if you would like a closer look:
How to Rid Your Garden of Toads and Frogs Frogs and toads are wonderful additions to any garden. They eat an amazing number of insect pests, including slugs and snails. However, if you are tripping over them on garden paths, you may want to discourage them from taking up residence. Steps: 1. Remove any wood piles, old lumber or pots from ground level. Toads live in dark, damp places during the daytime and hunt in the evening hours. If you remove their favorite haunts, they will move on. 2. Keep pet food inside the house. Toads have been known to help themselves to a free meal from Fido's bowl of kibble. If you feed your pet outside, pick up any uneaten food before you retire for the night. 3. Empty water bowls, ground-level birdbaths or other containers that have standing water. Frogs and toads are attracted to moisture. Any standing water is an open invitation. (This step will also eliminate mosquitoes from your garden, but be advised, toads eat mosquitos, so once they have moved on, you may be plagued with an invasion of pesty insects.) Tips: Think twice before you decide to rid your garden of amphibians. They do much more good than harm. Warnings: If you use pesticides in your garden, you will kill frogs and toads. Their skin is a permeable membrane making them very susceptible to toxic chemicals. Mama Grizz |
