Title: Opinions on new truck...
Post by: Young Gun on October 03, 2007, 06:48:29 PM
I've had my Ram for about 2months now.  Love the truck but I think its time for a change.  I really need something bigger, and not a single cab.  Looking into getting a 4x4, street trucks are a fun and all but thats just not me.  Especially since its easy to speed in the truck, I caught myself doing 65 in a 40 today ???.  So if I had something bigger maybe I wouldn't feel the need to speed (or at least I keep telling myself that)  Ive always wanted a big ole' F250 Diesel, but I would need to get an older model in order to afford it and I'm unsure of the miles on most.  I know diesels are 'supposed' to last forever but ehhh... I don't know when its pushing 200k.  I want something that will last a few good years.  Something I can trust in and wont break down all the time.

Suggestions? :-\

if you dont want to speed, DO NOT get a diesel. With the newer diesel, especially when setup right, you can't help but blow away all the little ricers. They are amazingly fast.

and just a thought I had a dodge 3500 4x4 2003 sold it with 44k brand new after I sold the boat not much use for the big thing but my bro had a ford 99 f-250 4x4 and sold it with 237k and it ran fine a lil rough but it was a work truck in louisiana most the time after Katrina but after he finished there we sold it and it still running but I still dont like fords but all diesels as long as you change oils and filters and keep them up and running they can run for a very long time with lil going wrong unless you start tinkering with them I sold my dodge with and edge computer with juice and it ran hard and I did nothing else so it is true what bigscrub says once you start you always want more just a thought if you dont want speed just leave them as you get them if new and the guy who did my maintanance on my dodge has a 95 3500 4x4 with no $Hit 600 k on it and it runs like a champ but he is a mechanic dodges you should have the valves adjusted every 50-60k but it will last you a life time well kept

But thats if you upgrade it, just buying a stock diesel it wont have that crazy amount?  I mean it will have some "umph" but not what your talking about.  I've seen videos like that where the diesel just shuts out the car.

The problem with my truck is that when your in it it feels like your driving a car basically.  Then again it is a street truck and thats the whole principle.  But if you drove it you would see what I mean.  I figured if I got a bigger truck, I would be more cautious with speed and not whipping around corners.  In the ram I can take corners going 25-30mph like no body's business.  Thought that Bigger truck = more cautious and slow.

Yep. Even my V10 will get me in trouble. I cought myself at 95mph on the way to big scrub one night. (pulling six quads on a trailer)

it all depends on how you drive realy, my truck will pick up speed prety quick without noticing if you dont pay atention just because u always feel like your doing 20mph. a lifted truck with nothing done to the moter will tend to be incredibly slow tho unless its a diesel or like a chevy 8.1 gasser.

I'l trade you your ss/t for my 4x4.  Probably worth the same. I mis my SS/T.  I don't need my lifted 4x4.  A street truck would do me just fine.

It doesn't matter what you drive, after you get a few of those $300 speeding tickets, you WILL slow down.

Lol very true.  I've actually had cops want to pull me over.  Not too long ago I was driving and in front of me was a hill so you couldnt see traffic coming.  A cop appeared and I checked my speed and I was doing 45 in a 30 ???.  He pointed at me and then braked and took the next right as to turn around or cut me off.  But I got to the end of the street and took a right at the light.  Lost him ;)

rebel sst i am goin wut ur goin through, i want a diesel so bad bro, something bigger, but them diesels do have some balls!!!!!! my dad had one and it was a 6speed manual, fun as hell to run! get your truck from carmax bro, trade ur truck in and put it dwn on a diesel, i went to carmax to quote my truck and asked the salesman if i could trade in my truck for a diesel and make payments, he said tis doable but a co-signer is the way to go, good luck bro

Lol, its not that I want a diesel, I just want a bigger truck.  But I don't want to get a big behemeth that runs on gas.  I love my current truck, runs awesome.  I wish I could keep it and have it as a project but I know thats not going to happen.  Biggest factor for me is room.  Currently I have stuff in the passenger seat and its just piling up hah.  And next year I know that I will be cartin two friends to school atleast.  Thats going to be some cramming if I dont go bigger :D

Just a heads up-diesels are a little more expensive to maintain.  Oil changes generally run from about $70-$90 and need serviced as often as a gas engine and also the fuel filter(s) need to be changed out approx every 15,000mi and they run anywhere from $60-$130.  Getting an older model the diagnostics for any problems (check engine lights, running rough) are generally more also.  Depending on the concern-we start diesel diag. at either $125 or $240.   If your looking into getting a Ford, I would advise you away from the 6.0L-especially '03 or '04 models.  7.3L is a great work horse and engine and virtually impossible to kill.  Hope this helps you out in a decision.

What about 05 models with the 6.0?  I know of a guy up the street selling his 05 cause he is moving.  Not really in my price range but do they have something different from the 03-04s like u said before?

lol the two friends im taking next year are dudes so I would like as much room as possible.  A limo truck would be quit nice :P.  Only reason I am taking them is because they live right on the road I take to school.  If a girl wants a ride and is out of the way its gas or ass ;)

as long as maintenance is kept up and done at the proper intervals on the '05 and newer 6.0L's they seem to do well.  I have a few friends with little or no problems out of their 2005's and up models and absolutely love them.  Myself, I can't see paying for the fuel, maintenance or repairs-kinda pricey if you have to worry about that sorta thing-money that is.  Then again, I'm a cheap mf'er.

I know gas will be a lot, but the maintenance doesn't seem TOO bad.  Around $80bux for an oil change every 2-3k miles isn't bad.  For me that will be every 3months I supposed.  Oil filters isn't a biggie, especially if its every 15k miles.  I'm definitely going Ford, I've always liked their trucks and might as well give them a shot.  I didn't really like Dodge before I had my Ram, but now Dodge is probably my 2nd favorite truck, Ford being #1.

whay are u concerned with maitnance, anyone who ownes a big lifted truck should be capable of doing his own oil change and feul filter, its not hard. and let me warn you, if you get a diesel it will be bone stock for the same price as a gas truck with lift kit, tires, rims, exhaust, intake, and all kinds of extras for the same cost as a bone stock diesel, so if you want a big lifted diesel it will have to be alot older just to get you back in a resonable price range.

I know what you mean about a single cab truck. My first truck was a 1982 Ford F-150 with a 302 V8 that was a single cab and it got the job done but It was a tight squeeze having to drive to Arcadia a couple of times a month with 2 other people. Then I bought a 97 Chevy Silverado that I really have had an awesome time with and it is an extended cab with a few upgrades that I did to it. Now I have an 07 Dodge Ram Thunder Road Quad Cab which I really like. Just start off small and work your way up man.

The thunder roads are awesome.  I saw one that was lifted the other day (why I have no idea...2WD offroader?) and it looked sweet.  I'm now trying to see if theres anyway I can keep the SS/T as a project truck and just get a diesel DD.

The SS/T sold today.

The operation didn't go so smooth either.  Guy came over today around 10, looked the truck over.  Wanted to take it for a test spin, so I said sure.  We both hop in the truck and go down the road.  After driving around some backroads, he pulls back onto my street and I say "c'mon give it some gas wussy" (I said something else that rhymed with wussy ;)) So he does and the next thing you know we both hear a clank clank clank.  I look out the passenger mirror just in time to see the right exhaust tip sliding across the pavement, then going off the road and into some sand.  We turn around and after 5mins of looking we find it.  It was all scrapped up, and im like wtf how did this fall off.  I look underneath and yeah the clamp is gone.

So after all that is said and done we get back in the truck to go home.  Vroom... vrooom.  Why isnt the truck going?  We get out and what do ya know... we're stuck in sugar sand.  YAYYy! >:(  So after about 15mins of trying to push it out I say screw it.  Called up my neighbor and he came with his truck and pulled us out.  The guy jokingly said I should drive home, maybe I will have better luck accomplishing this task.

So not the in the best mood I stupidly hit the gas and smoke the tires while taking off.  Didn't notice the cop two streets above pulling out.  He flags me down.  He comes to the window with this pissed off look on his face.  I start telling him what just happened and how I didn't mean to please don't give me a ticket.  He just stays silent and I'm thinking crap I'm getting a ticket.  Next thing you know the cop starts laughing and tells us that he was at the corner the whole time.  He saw the tip fall off, watched us looking for it, and getting stuck.   So he just says go home and we wait for him to pull out from behind us, he pulls up next to the truck and im like WTF.  He nails the gas and does about a 20ft burnout.

Needless to say, the truck sold ::)

I don't know yet really.  I've actually been straying away from trucks, was thinking of getting an old Mustang 5.0 and modding it.  I saw one I liked but I don't know how much the guy wants, he won't contact me back.
