Title: We need to do something or it's gone - Clean up / Group Ride Post by: Thrumud on November 21, 2006, 01:26:09 PM I remember long ago when we were allowed in the Picayune ( Badluck / Squares ) when people would talk about the place being shut down. No one believed it would happen, and all of the sudden “Closed for Ever”. Last time we rode out at Holey Land, a FWC officer said because of accidents, death, wreck less riding, and most of all – the trash out there, that the place has been under the scope of County officials and they are looking forward to closing the place down for OHV use. I don’t know about you guys but I love to ride out at Holey Land. Not only is it legal to ride there, but it’s the only place to ride for Dade, Broward & Palm Beach riders. It’s also the only place were you can camp over night and ride like you want outside the levees.
For those that haven’t enjoyed Holey Land to it’s fullest you guys don’t know what your missing. Lots of people say it’s mostly for 4x4, it’s true when it’s wet but when the water levels go down sports and dirt bikes can ride through most of the open land out there. With all this said, I would like to schedule a clean up ride at Holey Land with members of this site. The crew at AMX brought this up a while back but we need to do something soon before this place becomes a thing of the past. We would like to schedule a date where lots of people can show up. We are looking at Sat Feb 3rd, some of us will camp out the day before and anyone is welcome to join us. Any suggestions are welcomed. Clean up will begin at 10 AM Sat 3rd through 1PM and then WE RIDE ! If you would like to attend please post it. I'll have one of my guys bring out a small dump truck to load the trash into. It disgusts me everytime I go out there that people choose to be such pigs. What would be even more effective is if everyone who cares about Holeylands would pick up a couple of trash bags worth of junk everytime they went. It wouldn't be such a mess out there. We're never going to change the idiots because they're not even on here to read about it. But we can take a proactive stance and improve our own chances of keeping this excellent riding area open.

We need to seriously protest all the usual spots like Croom and Ocala too.People ride there and I think it's a matter of safety that we should let them know it needs to be properly maintained. I can't personally make it that weekend, as I have a work conflict. I would like to make a suggestion though. Has anyone contacted the Broward airboat & half track club or the Palm Beach club? Those guys have poker runs out there, and a lot of them bring quads. Maybe a joint effort?? Might be a good way to spread good will with the hunters / buggy crowd as well.

Early February is still pretty wet out there. Unless you have a 4x4, I wouldn't travel that far at that time to ride. If you hold off until March, the riding out there is awesome. Miles and miles of flat out running (don't do it on the levies or in the parking areas!!!) or just casually cruising along taking in the beauty of the Everglades. Of course, you are more than welcome to join us in cleaning up this most excellent riding area! Hope to see you there. Bring the Rubicon! They do real well out there, particularly if you have good mud tires. You can find quite a few areas to ride the EX but you are definitely limited. It's still too wet to really enjoy a sport quad out there. I had my Raptor out there last Saturday but ended up staying on or near the levies (always dry) where it tends to be a bit drier this time of year. As far as access, you can get out there with anything. You won't need a 4x4 truck at all. The road is paved most of the way and then it's hard packed limestone from there on.

The short answer is that it's too wet out in the 'Glades for him to ride at this time. However, there are miles of levies that he can ride on. There is also a trail that runs along the south levy that is pretty dry but there are many mud holes you will have to weave your way through. My son also rides a race quad. He rides an Apex and he was with us. We did manage to get about 1 mile out before I turned us around because the mud was getting too soupy and I didn't want to tear up the carrier bearings in my Raptor or his Apex. Bring him down. It will be a nice day even if all you do is ride the levies (keep in mind that the speed limit on the levies is 30 mph and FWC does enforce it). They make a great place to view all the wildlife. You can figure about 90 miles across the Alley to US 27 then north about 15 miles then back west 7 miles to the bridge. The pump house is another 7 miles from there. If you go, once you are heading north on US 27, start watching for the transmission lines that cross 27 and there will also be a pump station there. This is right at the Broward/Palm Beach County line. After you cross the bridge, you will see a sign that says Rotenberger/Holeylands WMA. Then do a u-turn from the left turn lane. Go back towards the bridge and turn right immediately before the bridge. Go 7 miles and you are there. The first parking area is 1/4 mile after the pavement ends.

If its OK with you guys I would like a local newspaper to come out and write about us helping the community. I will be passing out flyers at our meeting on Jan. 24, 2007 about the clean up. I am assuming we are cleaning the first bridge (meaning left and right side of it) which is really bad, I was there this past saturday and it was super dirty. and depending on how many people show up and how fast we finish we can clean up the little area everyone camps out by the pumpstation towards the right side under the HOley land sign. As for it being too wet to ride, not true, I was out there with Raptors, grant it you can't reach the house in the back but you can ride. Hope to see you all there and I hope your site helps us by attending the January 24, meeting. I was out there on my Raptor and easily got over a mile out but then started getting really bad. Unfortunately, unless you don't mind replacing carrier bearings, it's not a good idea to go mudding with sport quads. There are still areas you can ride without getting too wet and I wouldn't advise anybody to pass on this ride. This time of year in the Everglades is really nice. You will truly enjoy the day.

It was not really wet out at all Last weekend when we rode. As MiamiGirlRider stated it was chilly. We have 4x4 and had no problem in 2 wheel drive. Jim is taking the day off so we will be out there bright and early, if we do not go up the night before and camp out. After trying to get the bus rolling for hours (it was a comedy of errors - no charcoal, no number plates and back to the shop, forgot fuel, forgot helmets - we just weren't with it last night), at 10:00 last night I finally said it just wasn't worth any more aggravation. Obviously, we weren't meant to go to the race. So today, we went to Holeylands. I was stunned by how much it has changed over the last 3 weeks. It's like May out there; it is so dry, you can ride for miles and miles. Bring anything you want to ride. My son was riding his KTM 50 mini-cycle out there today. You can go pretty much as far as you want. For those that are thinking about camping, I'm almost positive I'll be taking my motorhome out to the pump house Friday and staying until Sunday. We can make a full weekend out of this with cookouts, riding, the clean-up, and more riding. PM me if your interested in hooking up. I might even go out there again tomorrow! ;D

FWC is showing a big presence out there and that can only mean that we are being scrutinized. I have ridden out there for nearly 10 years and never saw as many game wardens as I have over the last year. We can't lose this area! If we clean up after ourselves it will show that we care and we deserve to continue to have use of this area. You will never appreciate the Everglades until you've seen it up close like this. I honestly think I would sell all my quads if we lost Holeylands. If you ride out there, come do your part and help us clean up. If you've never been, come down and experience this area while you still have a chance. I hope we can turn this into a massive response and show the State of Florida that we appreciate the environment too.

From West Palm Beach, take Southern to Belle Glade then down around to South Bay. Once in South Bay, head south on US-27 to approximately MM47, which is the Broward/Palm Beach County line. There is a bridge there with a large pump house on the east side. Immediately before the bridge, turn right (west) and go approximately 7 miles where the pavement will end. A quarter mile past the end of pavement is another bridge with two parking areas, one on either side. We will be meeting there and cleaning up the surrounding areas. If you are coming from the south, same thing, take US-27 to the Broward/Palm Beach County line, cross the bridge, do a u-turn and then take the right immediately before the bridge. If we get enough people out there, we can be done and riding in no time at all. Bring your friends, your rides, some food and drink and have a good time.

REALLY FOLKS, its embarrassing and sad that we are so many in this site and only 3 show up to an OHV meeting. We need to unite. It was a great ride and most of all a great clean up. Many new faces, OffRode, Digginfool, Aintskeered, Charlotte and her family, Hunter and his family, ScooterB and his boy(Aintskeered, what happened to you? I was looking foward to riding with you and your son?) Anyways, I was really happy to meet new faces, I am looking foward to our Lake Delancy Group Ride and S. Estates ride. I will post pictures up tonight and will let everyone know when to pick up there newspaper. Next time i will bring my boys out make them pick up as well. I need to get them a bike so they can ride with me. I just started last year myself. the dump truck was key but if we all take away 1 or 2 bags of trash when we leave should be fine. Count me in when we do the clean up again. Is there any other riding spots that we can do a clean up ride?
