Title: Here is my letter I sent to my commissioners
Post by: yunt2ride on September 28, 2006, 01:28:59 PM

I would like to comment on the new state law that allows ATVs on unpaved roads. Some people may be concerned that if the county does not opt out that they will have more problems with ATVs. Do you not think that if people are riding them on dirt roads now illegally that they will stop riding them after the county opts out. No they will not, they will keep riding them illegally like they do now. This law will just make the people that ride them now illegally to be riding them legally and give some guildlines to abide by. If they break a speeding law then the sherrif can ticket them. After they pay a few tickets then they will slow down. How does the sherrif control the cars and motorcycles today. The same can be done with ATVs. You may get called now that the ATVers are riding on private property. This law will stop some of that. If the county takes this law away, then the county should give us a place to ride. We pay registration fees and taxes on these machines and should have a place for them. Money is spent on puchasing them and parts, gas, food, trucks and trailers,RVs and lots of camping equipment to go to other places out of the county. Revenue is getting lost by sending them out of the county. The law says that you must have your ATV registered and you must be a licensed driver to operate them, or by a minor accompanied by a licensed driver. Why couldn't the ordinace be written to take out the last part and to only include a licensed driver. Make it to where it is basically used as a car or motorcycle and to where they must abide by the same laws. This would be a step in the right direction.

                                        Thank You

Thats what people do when they complain. You have to remember that they work for us taxpayers. They actually sounded like they were listening to me. I spoke with several of them for about an hour. I did give them options when I called.

Thanks, its gonna take most everyone to call their commissioners to make things happen. People need to remember that just because the news says they have opted out does not mean they have. It just means they have asked the county attorney to draw up an ordinance to bring back to the table and vote on. Also if they do opt out, with enough people they can always reverse their decision.

Very Good Yunt2ride

I called the Bradford County sherrif dept today and ask about it over here and was told that the law will pass for Bradford County. It has not been opt out here. YET!

I agree with you. With all the money that is spent out on ATV's why can't the county's get together and find some land to make a park for ATV's. They could have like three or four county's combine together and build a place to ride for all the county's in each area.

Thanks for your letter and also thanks for posting the link to the law that was passed. I think it would be a good idea to have a copy on you cuz I know that their will be a few to give us a hassel.

One thing that I worry about is the ones that rip up and down the roads to make the county's go for the opt out.

I think I'll donate some time to be an ATV Police.

Thanks again
Donnie

While talking to commissioners on the phone. I was told the sheriff said that ATVers will not stop when a deputy trys to pull them over. He said he lets them go to keep from the atver from having an accident if they run. I asked them how does the sheriffs control the streetbikes that race on the backroads. He catches what he can and tickets them. One will only pay so many tickets before he loses his license. I told them that at least with an ATV, The sheriff knows the ATVer probably lives in that area and will be back on the road again and will catch him sooner or later or find out where he lives and drive right up to his house and wait on him.
