The first step is to build a data logger. You can buy the cable ( http://www.aldlcable.com/) or build it for $7.

Super easy:

Here is the circuit:

Ready to solder:

All done up with power and serial port.

Instructions:

http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/pages.asp?pageid=24

In the truck:

The connection to your vehicle.

Couple of screen shots from the software:

Reviewing the data logs in slow motion I can see exactly what to changes throughout the different rpm and load conditions to make the thing scream. I was always a carburetor guy, but TBI is da chit!!!

Very sweet software, screw those handheld scanners!!

http://www.tunerpro.net/

In the next post I will describe some of the changes I am going to make to the chip and how to do it, and the improvements.... or if it gets worse.

Are you positive about the ECM in your rig? Some just have an ODB2 plug with older computer behind it. http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/c3xref.html

I was working down there at Coral Way & Ponce for three month...I got a few parking tickets throughout the project with 15 minutes = $0.25. I'm sure you know the parking situation there. The client paid all eight of the $18 dollar tickets I accumulated so I am happy.

The crash was separate. The officer failed to yield my right of way and tagged my bumper on the road.

If you can short terminals in the connector and read codes, you can do this my friend!

I have a few ancient eprom programmers, but decided to spring for this one. I really like it so far for $30.

http://cgi.ebay.com/PCB5-0-Lite-Willem-EPROM-programmer-BIOS-PIC-from-USA_W0QQitemZ310055784311QQihZ021QQcategoryZ4661QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

LOL, tonight I used christmas tree ornament hangers to save $10 on the moates memcal reader adaptor.

Got em in there easy I must say!

Looks like it belongs!

Haha, I am way too cheap to buy a parallel cable so I plugged the eprom programmer into the back of my desktop.

I have noticed while data logging my motor has the weirdest timing advance going on, now I see why.
Check this BS spark table in my stock PROM out!!!!!

Here we see how I am going to erase my memcal with the UV sterilizer on my fishtank...haha, I have another germicidal lamp in a tool box I really use.

That is how I became a tuner for $35. Wink

Wow, simply amazing what a few numbers can do in the ECU. I have to admit I have killed my mileage for now BUT the freakin truck feels like it picked up about 100 HP. I can literally bake my tires from a dead stop full of tools.  Upping the shift points is a bad idea for a street truck...lol, sure was fun in the rain today though. Oh well, tomorrow I will try out some programming that is guaranteed to make the thing feel like a 4 banger. Hopefully the mileage will match.

I just have to thank Chevy1500z71 for leading me to this! Sure wish I had a dyno....

a dyno shop will charge you about 100$ for an hour, so when you think your close to the perfect tube, pay for an hour on the dyno and get it dialed in 100$ with a wideband 02 sensor and all.

everyone always gets there stuff tuned before me! i keep saying im going to tune my truck but i just cant get the extra money.

I'm think I'm going to go with the LM-1 wideband adaptor from Moates. http://www.moates.net/product_info.php?cPath=48&products_id=91 I can get the 5 wire it takes for $50.

I'll probably grab the Ostrich 2.0 emulator first though...no way I would pay to put this stocker on a dyno...well maybe to win a bet or something...

im just buying the 02 sensor and wiring it into the egr pin on the ecm, it gets rid of the egr and i can just read it for data logging. i wouldn't actually have your ecm use the wideband to trim up the fuel curve with in closed loop. i have a whole write up on how to wire in the wide band into your ecu without any adapters, but it removes the egr function, for me thats a good thing tho since i have headers...
