Polaris Sportsman Starter

Hey there..

Need some help troubleshooting problem here.. Have my Polaris sportsman 400 and all of a sudden the electric start went dead on me?? The pull start works fine still for it? I traced back the wiring and no burnt or cut wires anywhere just doesn't want to turn when I push the button???

Was thinking it might be the Solenoid maybe but not sure before I start replacing parts on it???

You can see where the power stops. You said you think it might be the solenoid. You can use the test light to see if there is power going in/out of the solenoid. If you have power in and no power out then you know it is bad.

Also did you check the main fuse?

Looks like power going to starter as test light worked....

Just tried again and now all I get when turn the key is a click click each time, but pull start and cranks fine?

??

is the click click from the solenoid? if so the solenoid might be bad, but the click click sounds to me like a dead battery

Coming from right by the battery (left side/towards front) actually under the seat??

Is that the solenoid then you think??

I tapped on it a few time when turing the key and turned over then stopped then clicked again like not enough "juice" to turn over???

Any chance it could be the battery maybe there???

I think the starter is bad. You can charge the battery and try it again. I would say the starter is hanging up.

Thanks... Have battery on charger now will let it go for a few hours and see what happens....

also check that solenoid, i had that issue on my ds 650 where you could charge the battery up an it will still sit there an click click and we picked up another solenoid an that was the issue

You may also take off all the wire to the battery, solenoid and starter and clean the ends of them. They will get corrosion on them. Do them one at a time and replace them and then go to the next. Its just easier to take a not off and clean it and put it right back on and you do not get anything mixed up. You could jump the battery to the starter directly also and see if the starter spins over.

The starter on my 450 Sportsmans did the same thing. I tapped the starter and it turned over a few times then quit. It needed a new starter. Replaced the starter and the thing fired right. The battery was not touched.
